3Ls: Short Term Law Clerk Needed ASAP for Shelby County Circuit Court, Division III
The Circuit Court seeks a 3L to serve as a short-term law clerk to assist a judge who will be sitting by designation until Judge Valerie Smith’s replacement is named. The first judge to sit by designation will be retired Judge Karen Williams. Of course, we do not require work of our law clerks during the week of exams.
The law clerk’s primary responsibility is to prepare the judge for the Friday motion docket. By mid-week, they are to prepare a spreadsheet of the motions indicating the nature of the motion and the attorneys on both sides. They meet with the judge each week to discuss the upcoming motion docket for the division and to get any special assignments related to the upcoming motions. Law clerks review all documents related to the motions, research the issues, and prepare briefs as needed.
Law clerks contact attorneys and self-represented litigants with questions and with instructions for their court appearance. They must arrive no later than 8-8:30 a.m. on Fridays to meet with the judge and to inform the judge and the courtroom clerk of any strikes/updates. In addition to working on motions, law clerks conduct additional research as requested.
