NATIONAL MOCK TRIAL TEAM: INFORMATION SESSION (TUESDAY, OCTOBER 18TH, 12:15 P.M., HISTORIC COURTROOM) AND SIGN-UP FOR TRYOUTS

To all 2L and 3L Students:

Coaches Danny Schaffzin, Jodi Wilson, and Brigid Welsh invite you to try out for the Law School’s 2016-17 National Trial Team.  In 2012, the National Trial Team won a regional championship and finished as national semifinalists (final four) among 320 teams entered in the National Trial Competition.  In 2011 and 2014, the Team reached the NTC regional finals.  We are looking for students interested in improving their trial advocacy skills to help us build on this winning tradition.

2016-17 Regional Competition: The National Trial Team will compete in the Regional Rounds of the National Trial Competition at Washington University in St. Louis School of Law on February 16-18, 2017.

Tryout Information Session: An Information Session about the National Trial Team and tryouts will be held on Tuesday, October 18th, at 12:15 p.m., in the Historic Courtroom.  The Information Session is NOT mandatory.

Tryout Dates and Times: Tryouts will be held on Friday, October 28th, and on Monday, October 31st.  Each tryout will last 15 minutes.

Preparation: Applicants will be expected to give a closing argument based on State of Lone Star v. Martin, a case file from a previous National Trial Competition.  The closing argument should be 5-7 minutes in length.  Applicants can argue for either the State or Defendant.  Any questions about the substance of the closing argument should be directed to Professor Schaffzin at dschffzn@memphis.edu.

Registration: Interested students should register for the National Mock Trial Team’s TWEN page (2016-17 National Mock Trial Team”) and sign-up for a tryout slot under the “sign-up sheets” tab on the TWEN page.  Once you have signed up for a tryout slot, please e-mail a current resume to Professor Schaffzin at dschffzn@memphis.edu.  You can access the tryout case file, State of Lone Star v. Martin, under the “Tryouts Case File” tab on the TWEN page.  Please register for your National Trial Team tryout by 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 25th.

Thank you for your interest, and we look forward to seeing you at the information session on Tuesday, October 18th.
