What do Air Force JAG Corps Selection Boards look for in a successful applicant?
When evaluating applicants, our selection boards use the whole person concept. We consider academic performance, curricular and extracurricular involvement, community service, work experience, strength of character, and leadership potential. We look for agile applicants who want to be challenged and are open to multiple areas of practice. We seek applicants who have the desire and potential to take on immediate practice opportunities to include litigating cases in the courtroom, counseling clients on civil legal matters, and advising commanders on various legal issues.
In their application packages, your students and alumni can demonstrate these principles in a number of ways. For example, in their resume, applicants should identify any experience gained in oral and written advocacy, client counseling, and legal research and writing. In their motivational statement, they should explain why they want to serve in the JAG Corps, and provide some background on who they are as a person. Letters of recommendation provide a great opportunity to not only highlight an applicant’s legal talents, but also to demonstrate dependability, the ability to successfully work on a team, and character. Applicants should prepare for the interview by familiarizing themselves with the JAG Corps practice model and military life. Finally, your students and alumni should apply early and if they are not selected, encourage them to reapply!
