The Department of Human Resources Office of General Counsel for the State of Tennessee (Nashville) seeks a 1L or 2L to serve as a Law Student Intern (Paid/Part-Time)

The Department of Human Resources Office of General Counsel seeks a law student for an internship to support the Appeals and Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) divisions. The position will be for summer 2020 and will be located in Nashville, TN. This is a part-time position and will be compensated at the minimum wage rate of $7.50/hr. Interns will be responsible for securing their own housing for the duration of the internship.

The purpose of the Appeals Division is to promulgate rules and policies along with investigations to ensure compliance with employment actions falling under the Tennessee Excellence in Accountability Management Act (T.E.A.M. Act). The purpose of the EEO Division is to partner with customers to promote a culture of diversity and equality in the workplace.

Key Responsibilities:

Appeals: Under the guidance of OGC attorneys, manages comprehensive cases dealing with employee disciplinary actions falling under the T.E.A.M. Act; Evaluates complaints and disciplinary actions with existing law, departmental rules, and policies; collaborates with State-wide partners to gather information on employment practices; draft appeal decision letters for Commissioner review; and regularly discuss issues with departmental leadership.

EEO: Assists with comprehensive investigations alleging workplace discrimination and harassment under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act/Tennessee Human Rights Act, abusive conduct in the workplace/workplace bullying, and retaliation.

OGC Expectations: Effectively and professionally communicates during interviews, as well as other written and oral communication with involved parties and state agencies.

Assists Office of General Counsel attorneys in formulating, revising, and ensuring compliance with state and federal laws, rules, policies, and best practices.

Perform additional legal work as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must currently be enrolled in an accredited institution and be in good academic standing (GPA of 2.0 or higher).

If the student is eligible for school credit, the student is solely responsible for ensuring Office of General Counsel receives any and all documentation to assist in receiving school credit. Intern must be authorized to work in the United States.

Must sign any required Agency-specific Intern Handbook at the outset of the internship and abide by its terms; and complete Respectful Workplace and G.R.E.A.T. Customer Service training with one (1) month of the internship start date.
