The employers below are participating in On Campus Interviews (OCI) or Resume Collects (you usually must submit more than a resume!) for 2Ls during the fall semester. Please note that most employers do not participate in OCI or Resume Collects, but rather hire through word of mouth, from received applications, or through a job posting. Therefore, don’t forget to reach out to employers you are interested in and to check Symplicity frequently. Tennessee Valley Authority (apply by August 1; found in Symplicity OCI “FALL 2021 OCI: TVA Virtual OCI”) Spring and Summer 2022 Legal Internship Programs Office of the General Counsel Tennessee Valley Authority, Knoxville, TN The Tennessee Valley Authority, a corporation owned by the U.S. government, is the largest public power provider in the U.S. TVA’s Office of the General Counsel has approximately 40 attorneys that provide a full range of legal services to TVA’s organizations, including representing TVA’s interests in judicial and administrative litigation. Legal interns will be assigned to work on multiple assignments in TVA’s Office of the General Counsel. Assignments are given in terms of specific objectives; work is reviewed upon completion. Guidance is available throughout the assignments. We seek those in the top 33% and we require a GPA of 2.75, As always, TVA is especially interested in candidates with diverse backgrounds. Virtual interviews will be held for selected applicants via Webex on August 10.
Compensation For full summer (10 weeks or longer), 40 hours per week, paid legal internship. Hourly wage is $29.25, parking expense reimbursement up to $50 per calendar month, and a one-time housing stipend of $2,000. However, if TVA notifies you that relocation is not required, you will have the option, by providing notice to TVA no later than February 24, 2022, to voluntarily relocate to Knoxville for your term. If you choose to relocate to Knoxville after providing such notice, your offer includes a one-time housing stipend of $2000. If you choose not to relocate, you will be required to work remotely in telework status during the entirety of your summer term, and your offer does not include such a one-time housing stipend of $2000.

This is a 10 week paid clerkship with the start date to be determined upon hiring. The firm focuses on Civil Litigation. Selected applicants will be interviewed on campus on September 15.

The SPLC is dedicated to working side-by-side with the communities it serves to seek justice and fight hate and bigotry. Using litigation, legislation, public education, and other forms of advocacy, the SPLC works toward the day when the ideals of equal justice and equal opportunity will be a reality. The SPLC has earned a reputation as a force among social justice organizations, safeguarding and defending crucial civil rights victories during some of the most challenging periods in our nation’s history. The SPLC’s work has become increasingly vital as our country becomes more diverse and hate and bigotry grow. In the face of new challenges, the SPLC has maintained an unwavering resolve to promote and protect our nation’s most cherished ideals.
Practice Groups:
· Children’s Rights – Our Children’s Rights practice group is focused on stopping the “school to prison pipeline;” ensuring educational equity for children from all backgrounds, particularly poor and minority students; and ensuring children’s access to mental health services in the most integrated environments appropriate to their needs.
· Criminal Justice Reform – Our Criminal Justice Reform practice group is dedicated to ending the mass incarceration of adults, juveniles, and immigrants; stopping the practice of trying children as adults; fighting the criminalization of immigrants; and ending abusive conditions of confinement and other exploitative practices of the criminal justice system.
· Economic Justice – Our Economic Justice Project is fighting back against deeply engrained policies and practices that punish the poor. We’re currently working to end debtors’ prisons, wealth-based bail systems, and related criminal justice practices that trap the poor in a cycle of court debt that can cause their ongoing incarceration. We work to protect low-income consumers from predatory loan practices and ensure that the poor have access to the social safety net.
· Immigrant Justice/Southeast Immigrant Freedom Initiative (SIFI)– Our Immigrant Justice Project is working to protect the dignity and workplace rights of guest workers and other migrants; protect the civil and human rights of immigrants from discriminatory laws; stop unfair deportation practices; and uphold the rights of immigrant children to enroll in public schools and receive English language instruction and other services which they’re entitled.
· LGBTQ Rights/Special Litigation – Our LGBTQ Rights/Special Litigation practice group is working to ensure that LGBTQ people achieve full equality and dignity under the law. This practice group is also fighting in the courts against hate groups and extremists who target people based on their race, religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
· Voting Rights – Our Voting Rights practice group is fighting back through litigation, legislative advocacy and education to end systematic voter suppression and to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to make their voice heard at the ballot box.
Office Locations: Our intention is for our Internships to be in office however, if there are restrictions due to COVID-19, there maybe opportunities for remote work.
· Montgomery, AL – The Southern Poverty Law Center was founded and is headquartered in the city that was at the heart of the Civil Rights Movement. Nearly all of our Practice Groups, as well as the rest of the SPLC’s program areas and operations staff, work out of this centralized location.
· Atlanta, GA – Our legal staff in Atlanta primarily focus on work on our Immigrant Justice Project and Voting Rights, and LGBTQ Rights and Special Litigation.
· New Orleans, LA – The legal team in New Orleans focus on Children’s Rights, Criminal Justice Reform, and Economic Justice.
· Jackson, MS – In Jackson, our teams work across Children’s Rights and Criminal Justice Reform.
· Miami, FL – Our teams in Miami work in the Children’s Rights and Criminal Justice Reform, and Immigrant Justice Project
· Tallahassee, FL – At our newest location in Tallahassee, teams work on Children’s Rights and Criminal Justice Reform.
· SIFI Remote Sites (Lumpkin, GA, Folkston, GA, Ocilla, GA, Alexandria, LA) – SIFI Locations require interns to have access to a car for the summer.
Responsibilities: Southern Poverty Law Center hosts law school students to work on current and cutting-edge legal issues in one of our six legal offices. Students are supervised by lawyers on our staff. We strive to create a work environment that is collaborative and intellectually rigorous. Summer interns assist Center attorneys, advocates, and paralegals with significant legal research and writing, field investigations, outreach, and public policy advocacy. Interns will be assigned to a practice group and office based on experience and the needs of the Center. Legal interns are compensated by the Center. The Center pays a base of $600 weekly, with opportunities for additional compensation through overtime. Interns are expected to begin in early June. A minimum commitment of ten consecutive weeks is expected. We unfortunately are not able to split summers. The firm handles tort, employment, business, and medical malpractice cases. Compensation $1000 per week. Top 1/3 of class; include GPA and class rank on resume.
