Post-Grad Careers and Student Internships with the IRS Office of Chief Counsel (On Campus Interviews Friday September 16).

HONORS PROGRAM (post-grad entry-level attorney positions)
Eligibility – 3Ls, graduating LLM’s, judicial clerks (or other eligibility preserving activity).
Timeline: Applications accepted between May and September of the year prior to the fall (generally September) start date. Apply on USA Jobs and on Symplicity “FALL 2022 OCI (September 12-16) IRS Office of Chief Counsel” by September 1st. Same qualifications and requirements as the Summer Legal Program.
SUMMER LEGAL PROGRAM (paid)
Eligibility – 2Ls, and 3Ls pursuing an LLM.
Timeline: Applications generally accepted between May and September of the year prior to the start of the summer position. Apply on USA Jobs and on Symplicity “FALL 2022 OCI (September 12-16) IRS Office of Chief Counsel” by September 1st.
Student Requirements:
1. JDs: Top 25% class rank or minimum GPA of 3.35 is required (if the school does not provide class rank or GPA at the time a selection is made, a minimum LSAT of 160 is required), or
2. Tax LLMs (including JD/Tax LLMs) who have completed any Tax LLM coursework: must satisfy the JD class rank requirement above or have a minimum GPA of 3.25 in the Tax LLM program (if the Tax LLM program does not provide GPA, a minimum LSAT of 160 is required);
3. Must attend an ABA accredited law school; and
4. Must be a U.S. citizen
Required Documents:
o A resume;
o An official or unofficial transcript from your law school (an official copy will be required if you are selected);
o An 5-10 page writing sample;
VOLUNTEER LEGAL INTERN/EXTERN (unpaid)
Eligibility – Primarily 2Ls and 3Ls.
Required Documents:
o A resume (include GPA and class rank, if available);
o A law school transcript (unofficial copy is fine);
o a 5 to 10 page writing sample.
Externships are available for the Spring (January-April), Summer (May-August), and Fall (September-December) semester. To apply for an externship, students will need to send an email to attyapplications@irscounsel.treas.gov or to their local field office that they would like to work, which includes the required documents and other requested information below. Packages are not complete unless all information is included. Additional Requirements: In your email, please include the city/state and semester in which you wish to be considered for an externship. If you are applying to Washington, DC, also include your top 5 choices for legal division placement.
Our National Office legal divisions are only located in Washington DC. For externships outside of Washington, DC, your package will be forwarded directly to the field office in the city/state you requested.
