Compensation: $24 per hour
The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) is excited to offer an outstanding opportunity for college students to complete an internship with the Office of General Counsel (OGC) in the Nashville Central Office. Students can expect to gain an understanding of how TDEC OGC provides legal support to the entire Department, including environmental regulatory staff, parks and conservation staff, and in-house administrative services. Our program offers first-year and second-year law students the opportunity to learn about and practice environmental law in an engaging public practice setting.

About the Office of General Counsel:
TDEC’s Office of General Counsel has approximately 40 team members who support TDEC’s mission through the Talent, Dedication, Engagement, and Character of its staff by providing exceptional services as partners and facilitators to both internal and external clients and stakeholders.

Highlighted Responsibilities:
Legal interns will be provided with a variety of assignments from OGC attorneys, ranging from legal research and writing requests to drafting of enforcement and contractual documents. Legal interns will work with a direct supervisor in responding to these assignments. In addition to regular assignments, legal interns will be encouraged to attend administrative law hearings, regulatory board meetings, state legislative meetings, and other public meetings that provide a broad educational experience in state government.
Qualifications:
• First-year or second-year law students actively enrolled in an accredited law school as of May 2026.
• Students with a demonstrated interest in the field of environmental law and policy.
• Be legally authorized to work in the United States.
• Have a valid driver’s license.
