Preparing for the bar exam can be one of the most challenging and stressful experiences in law school. Researchers at West Virginia University are conducting a study (WVU IRB Approval on file) to explore new ways to support law students’ mental health and performance during bar exam preparation.

We’re inviting third-year law students like you to participate in a research project testing a mental performance program based on current trends in performance psychology. The workshop is an evidence-based approach designed to help people manage stressimprove focus, and stay committed to their goals even in high-pressure situations. Our pilot study suggests that these strategies may enhance well-being and mental performance.

By participating, you could:

  • Learn tools to better manage stress and anxiety during bar preparation.
  • Identify ways to stay motivated during bar preparation and overcome burnout after graduation.
  • Gain skills to improve psychological flexibility and focus under pressure.
  • Contribute to research that may help future law students navigate bar exam challenges more effectively.

You can find more information about the workshop here: https://youtu.be/xiPLpLy4C8Y

Participation is voluntary. You’ll be asked to complete online surveys about your well-being and study experiences. If you choose to participate in the workshop, it involves attending six weekly Zoom sessions (60 mins each) scheduled between late May and early July. These sessions are designed to be practical and efficient so as not to interfere with your bar preparation.

As a thank you for your time and effort, the first 300 participants may receive compensation of up to $450, depending on their level of participation and completion of study activities.

All information you provide will be kept confidential and securely stored. Participation or non-participation will have no impact on your academic standing or future opportunities.
