Professor Chris Peterson and Deepak Gupta have spent their careers advocating for consumers in the courts, in the federal government, and beyond. They have had leading roles in some of the biggest consumer protection fights of the day including forced arbitration and payday lending. Students are invited to join Consumer Law Advocates, Students, and Scholars for a virtual event to hear from two of the most dynamic figures in consumer law about their experiences working towards a fairer marketplace.
About the Speakers
Chris Peterson is the John J. Flynn Endowed Professor of Law at the University of Utah’s S.J. Quinney College of Law where he teaches contracts, commercial law, and consumer protection courses. Professor Peterson is actively engaged in public service and consumer protection. He has served as Senior Counsel for Enforcement Policy and Strategy in the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Office of Enforcement, Director of Financial Services for the Consumer Federation of America, and in 2020 he was the Democratic Party’s nominee for Governor of Utah. Supported by a broad coalition of organized labor, civil rights, and public interest organizations, he won more votes than any Democratic Party gubernatorial candidate in Utah history.
Deepak Gupta is the founding principal of Gupta Wessler PLLC and a Lecturer at Harvard Law School. He represents plaintiffs and public-interest clients in Supreme Court, appellate, and complex litigation. Deepak regularly appears before the U.S. Supreme Court, has handled appeals in every federal circuit and seven state supreme courts, and has testified multiple times before the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives. His cases cover a broad range of issues—from administrative and constitutional law to class actions and consumers’ and workers’ rights.
