Indie Memphis Film Festival – Law Student FREE Tickets and Discount Code

This year’s Indie Memphis Film Festival runs from Nov. 5-8, and they have several films in this year’s lineup exploring criminal justice, civil rights, and the relationship between individuals and various legal institutions, all of which may be interested to our law students.

The organizers have generously extended an offer to provide a number of free tickets to law students/faculty/staff to each of the following films, as well as a 50% off discount code in case the free ones are all taken by the time you attempt to get one. Additionally, they have given us a general 10% off code to use at any film at any time at the festival for our law students.

The applicable FREE and discounted films are:

  • When a Witness Recants, directed by Dawn Porter and executive produced by Ta-Nehisi Coates. It revisits the wrongful convictions of three Black teenagers in Baltimore who spent 36 years in prison, examining coerced testimony and the consequences of a profound miscarriage of justice.
  • Who Killed Alex Odeh?, a Sundance award-winning investigation into an unsolved assassination.
  • Possum Town, Daniel Christian exhumes the striking archival photography of O.N. Pruitt to confront the legacy of segregated Columbus, Mississippi. By bringing these historical images—ranging from everyday graces like baptisms to horrific cruelties—back to the present-day residents, the film forces a necessary, uneasy reckoning with a past that is still glaringly visible in the present.
  • True North, Michèle Stephenson constructs a stirring and galvanizing piece of activist cinema that operates as an electrifying history of the Black Canadian experience. Using the infamous 1969 student protest at Sir George Williams University in Montreal as a narrative focal point, the documentary exposes how the destination for Caribbean immigrants was often as traumatic as the environments they fled.
  • Police Beat, Robinson Devor directs this strikingly poetic, gently surreal compendium of criminal behavior set against the backdrop of Seattle. The film centers on “Z,” a young, Muslim bicycle cop who emigrated from Senegal.
