Law Review Mock Write-On Competition Meeting
Law Review invites 1Ls to learn about the Mock Write-On Competition on Tuesday, February 24, at 12:00 P.M. in Room 244.
Lewis Thomason, P.C. and Memphis Law Review will host a Mock Write-On, starting March 7th and ending March 15th. The Mock Write-On is an optional practice opportunity for students to prepare for the Summer Write-On Competition. The Summer Competition will begin on May 16 and will determine who is selected––based on the quality of work––to join the ranks of Volume 57 The University of Memphis Law Review. Specifically, the Mock Write-On is an optional dry run for the Case Comment and Bluebook Exam which are components of the Summer Competition.
A Case Comment is an analysis and opinion on a particular court case referred to in the competition as the case-in-chief. It is a limited writing exercise which is CLOSED RESEARCH—like your first semester memorandum, you will receive a specific list of available sources to use to supplement your analysis and opinion on the case-in-chief. Additionally, you will be provided with a sample Case Comment to familiarize yourself with its structure. A Case Comment is relatively short, normally about ten pages, and requires citations.
The Bluebook Exam consists of students identifying Bluebook errors and editing textual material by using the comment function on a Word document. The Bluebook Exam will be optional for completion of the Mock Write-On, but it is highly recommended that students attempt to complete it since it will be a required component for the Summer Write-On Competition.
For any 1L interested in being selected for The University of Memphis Law Review Volume 57, the Mock Write-On is an invaluableresource to prepare for Summer Competition. Students who participate will gain experience writing a Case Comment, a key assessment Law Review considers when selecting its staff. Additionally, lawyers at Lewis Thomason will provide valuable feedback on your Case Comment. Lewis Thomason will host all students who complete the Mock Case Comment for a networking event after Spring Break.
In summary, the Mock Write-On is an optional opportunity for interested 1Ls to gain familiarity with the components of the Competition, practice and receive feedback, and network with a great, local Memphis law firm. Even if you cannot finish a complete Case Comment, just participating in the Mock Write-On is great preparation for the Summer Competition. We encourage all 1Ls who are interested in Law Review to strongly consider participating in the Mock Write-On. Look for additional information in an email before Spring Break.
