Grief Counseling Resources

Dear Students,

I wanted to make you aware of several continuing options for grief counseling.

Dr. Earle Donelson, the law school counselor, is available on Wednesday afternoon for appointments at the law school.  Services are free for currently enrolled students.  Appointments can be made by calling the University Counseling Center at 901.678.2068 and letting them know you’d like to be seen at the law school.  Dr. Donelson and other counselors are also available during the normal business hours at the Counseling Center on main campus Monday – Wednesday: 8:00 am – 7:00 pm and Thursday and Friday: 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.

In addition, The Baptist Centers for Good Grief offer free individual grief counseling to all ages, as young as 4 years old and no cap on the adult age.  Appointments are scheduled Monday-Friday, from 9am-4pm.  An individual session consists of meeting with a licensed grief counselor, in a private & confidential counseling room.   They have two locations:

  • Kemmons Wilson Family Center for Good Grief-Collierville office is located at 1520 West Poplar Avenue, Collierville, TN 38017, located on the campus of Baptist Memorial Hospital – Collierville.  We are located in the rear of the campus, directly next door to the Baptist Reynolds Residential Hospice House.
  • Milla’s House – is located at 28 S. Evergreen Street, Memphis, TN 38104.  It is located just behind the Idlewild Presbyterian Church, a prominent landmark church that faces Union Avenue.

The University of Memphis Psychological Services Center also offers grief and counseling services at a reduced cost ($12/hour) for full-time students.   Call 901.678.2147 and ask to be seen by Jamison Bottomley, who has agreed to work with our law students, or another counselor.  (Note:  there is no limit to the amount of sessions permitted, unlike the University of Memphis, which has semester limits on the number of visits by each student).

Finally, if you need to talk to someone when other counselors are not available, you may call or text Ted Rice of Tennessee Lawyers Assistance Program at (615) 477-9174.  Mr. Rice can provide support by phone or video or arrange to have a local volunteer meet with you.

Thanks,
Dean Aden
