The University of Alabama System Office of Counsel furnishes comprehensive legal services to The Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama and its campuses – The University of Alabama (UA), The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), and The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). Office of Counsel attorneys and staff are strategically located throughout UA System. The UA System Office of Counsel recruits law students for a variety of employment opportunities, which provide students with unique and valuable experiences serving one of the campuses of the UA System and a pathway for a career with the Office of Counsel. Summer Law Clerkships (All offices)
Our summer clerkships provide law students 6 to 12 weeks of full-time work at our UA, UAB, or UAH campuses.
These summer positions will expose law students to the unique daily work of a major public university legal department and provide the student with real-world opportunities to contribute to the resolution of significant issues facing UA System campuses. Law clerks are paid $30.00 per hour. First year law students are expected to apply for these summer clerkships in the spring and second year law students are expected to apply in the fall of their second year.
Academic-Year Clerkships (UA and UAB Office)
Academic-year clerkships provide law students an extended and immersive part-time experience in the UA office. Students will work side-by-side with University Counsel to deliver high-quality legal service to UA administration, faculty, and staff on a wide variety of issues. Academic year clerks work a minimum of 16 hours per week.Academic-year clerks are paid $20.00 per hour. Law students are expected to apply for these clerkships in either the fall or spring of their first or second year.
Academic-Year Externships (UA Office)

Law Fellows Program (All Offices)
The Office of Counsel Law Fellows program provides qualified law graduates with a one-year, full-time term appointment in the UA, UAB, or UAH office. Law Fellows are expected to apply in the fall of their third year.
Law fellows receive a salary of $86,000.00 and are eligible for selected benefits, including participation in UA System medical, dental, and vision plans, life insurance plans, and the UAS 403(b) retirement plan.
Ideal candidates for Office of Counsel law student opportunities will be ranked in the Top 25% of their law school class, possess a demonstrated record of academic success and scholarship, and have a serious interest in a potential career as university counsel.
