EEOC INTERNSHIP

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is accepting applications from second year law students for an unpaid internship in the Memphis District Office, Legal Unit/Office of General Counsel, during the Summer of 2016 and Fall of 2016.

The EEOC operates as an independent agency of the federal government, responsible for enforcing federal laws prohibiting discrimination in employment, including discrimination against a job applicant or employee because of the person’s race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy and gender identity/transgender status), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information.

Legal interns will assist principally with legal research and analysis of ongoing and potential litigation. We also encourage the interns to attend depositions, court ordered mediations, settlement conferences and to observe court proceedings. Interns will also have the opportunity to become familiar with the civil rights statutes and the actual application of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.

The precise starting and ending dates of the internship will depend upon the intern’s interest and availability. We prefer a commitment for a minimum of 10 weeks. Applicants seeking a shorter commitment should indicate that preference in the cover letter. Applicants must have strong analytical, research, and writing skills, and a strong interest in employment discrimination work, civil rights, and/or public interest law.
