Upcoming Honor Council Elections

Honor Council elections are here. The purpose of this notice is to provide an outline for the election process, including deadlines and important dates and submission requirements.

Honor Council Purpose:

The Honor Code is a code of professional and academic standards. The Honor Council enforces the Honor Code. The Honor Council is composed of eleven law students elected by the student body. The Honor Council investigates and prosecutes alleged violations of the Honor Code.

HONOR COUNCIL ELECTION PROCESS:

Nominations: March 18–20

  • The ballot for elections to the Honor Council will be determined by anonymous nominations from the student body.
  • Students will place nominations, including that student’s full name and university email, in the ballot box located outside the student lounge during this week.

Vetting Process: March 21–26

  • Once nominations are submitted and the nomination period ends, the nominees will be invited to accept or decline the nomination by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs/Registrar’s Office.
  • The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs/Registrar’s Office will vet each nominee. The Dean will review the nomination list and remove nominees from the list if the Dean determines that a nominee is ineligible based on factors listed in 21.7(a)(2).
  • Once the Dean completes the vetting process, nominees will be notified as to whether they are eligible to be placed on the ballot.
  • Nominees then have the right to accept their nomination or remove their names from the ballot.
  • Any nominee that accepts their nomination should make plans to attend the nominee meeting on March 29 at noon. A verification e-mail will be sent to all nominees who successfully make it through the vetting process.

Nominee Meeting and Statement of Support: March 29, via Zoom or Room TBD, at 12:00 p.m.

  • Once the nominee list is finalized, the current Honor Council will hold an interest/informational meeting for all nominees who wish to place their name on the ballot.
  • Each nominee who wishes to proceed with his or her name on the ballot shall write a brief statement of interest in support of his or her nomination to be turned in at the meeting.
  • Failure to submit a Statement of Support by the deadline will result in removal of the nominee’s name from the ballot.

Elections: March 30–April 4

  • The final list of nominees will be placed on the ballot.
  • Campaigning for a position on Honor Council is NOT allowed.
  • The election will be conducted on Tiger Zone.
  • Number of Votes for Each Class:
    • Rising 2Ls will cast five (5) votes.
      • The five nominees from the rising 2L class who receive the most votes will be seated for a two-year term on the Honor Council.
      • The nominee who receives the most votes from the rising 2L class will serve as Secretary their 2L year and Chief Justice their 3L year.
      • The nominee who receives the second most votes in the rising 2L class will serve as a Student Justice their 2L year and Associate Chief Justice their 3L year.
      • The nominee who receives the third most votes will serve as a Student Justice their 2L year and as a Senior Student Justice their 3L year.
      • The remaining two students will serve a two-year term as Student Justices.
    • Rising 3Ls will cast one (1) vote.
      • The one nominee from the rising 3L class who receives the most votes will be seated for a one-year term as a Student Justice.
