Young Lawyers Division (YLD) Basketball League

A message from YLD to Memphis Law students:

Hello law students,

My name is Jonathan May, and I’m emailing in regard to the 2015 Memphis Bar Association Young Lawyers Division Lawyers Basketball League.  I am chair of the Sports Committee of the Young Lawyers Division in charge of coordinating this year’s league.  As some of you may be aware, the YLD opened the league to law students last 2 years and we are continuing with that trend so that law students may participate.  The only requirement is that you sign up for the Memphis Bar Association as a law student member.  Membership is free for law students and you can sign up via its website (click here).

As to the league, teams generally have anywhere between 6 to 10 players.  There is a fee to play in the league, but it is determined based on the total number of teams and players playing in the league, so we won’t have the exact number until closer to the start of the league.  We are looking to start the league on February 23, 2015.  Games are played two nights a week (Monday/Thursday) at gyms in Midtown and East Memphis.  Games will generally start around 6:30pm, with games at 6:30, 7:30, and 8:30.  If you are interested in playing, we ask that you sign up using the link above, print out the confirmation page showing you are signed up, and bring the printed page to the “draft” discussed below.

There will be an information session and (very) informal “draft”/happy hour on Thursday, February 5, 2015 at the Hard Rock Café on Beale Street starting at 5:30pm.  We will give new interested players some time to meet and talk to league members.  The new players will then be assigned to teams later that night or following the draft. If you want to play and cannot make the draft, that’s no problem – just let us know and we will put you in the draft and email you afterwards to let you know what team you’re on. Please email me (jmay@lewisthomason.com) with any questions.  We ask that all law students go through the draft.  If you played last year, however, please let us know (and what team you played with) so we can put you back on that roster if that’s what you prefer.

We hope to see you on the court!

Jonathan
