The\u00a0Law School for Journalists program returns with an in-depth look at how the media has covered, can cover, and should cover police-involved shootings by reviewing the highly publicized Darrius Stewart case. It will be a unique opportunity to hear and interact with the lawyers, judges, prosecutors, and reporters who were involved in the case and covered it.<\/p>\n

This event will feature a number of panels and discussions with key participants in the judicial proceedings and representatives from both sides of the case involved in explaining how the process unfolded. We will also have a panel of experienced local reporters who covered the Darrius Stewart case and its aftermath, who will go into detail about their reporting on the case and the challenges they faced. <\/span><\/p>\n

Keynote speaker: Roy L. Austin Jr., Deputy Assistant to President Obama and Director of the White House Office of Urban Affairs, Justice, and Opportunity. Austin is one of the nation\u2019s leading policymakers on policing and community-police relations. <\/span><\/p>\n

Attendees will also hear from reporters and attorneys regarding how reporters can most effectively use Tennessee law pertaining to public records and open meetings, as well as federal and state constitutional law on access to court proceedings and records. <\/span><\/p>\n

Presented by: Tennessee Coalition for Open Government (TCOG), the U.S. District Court for Western Dist. of Tennessee, the Memphis Bar Association, the University of Memphis School of Law and Just City.

The event is free of charge for law students, faculty and staff to attend.<\/span><\/p>\n

This event is $90 for attorneys\u00a0seeking CLE and free of charge to all others. <\/span><\/p>\n
