It is a tremendous accomplishment to have gotten into law school. Congratulations! Our student body is looking forward to having your class join us in the hallowed halls of our building. As a 3L serving as the 2016-2017 Student Bar Association President, I am excited for the new ideas, energy, and personality that your class will bring to the school.

The purpose of our Student Bar Association (“SBA”) is to bring all of the students of the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law into one body to foster a spirit of fellowship and cooperation and to advance the purposes of the School of Law. As registered students, you are officially members of the SBA. In the coming weeks of school, you will learn all about how the SBA works so be on the look out for more information. There are weekly meetings open to all students, social events, student activities, guest speakers, community service projects, and more. I encourage all of you to follow the SBA on Facebook for updates. SBA also will utilize the school’s blog, On Legal Grounds, to communicate. The link for the Facebook page is here.

My last word of advice is to be bold. As Uncle Ben Parker said to Peter Parker (also known as Spider-Man), “with great power comes great responsibility.” Being able to understand the law is powerful, but studying the law can be a daunting responsibility. I remember feeling both excited and terrified when I began my career as a law student. The work load of law school can be intense, and at times each student becomes overwhelmed. Embrace those feelings. When you become stressed take the time to remember why you started. The SBA Administrative Council members are always willing to give advice or offer friendship. I will have SBA President office hours on Tuesdays and Fridays during the fall semester. Feel free to stop by or reach out to me any time. I hope to see all of you at the SBA 1L Welcome Party on Friday, August 12th, 2016!

Sincerely,

Sydney Trujillo

Class of 2019: Welcome to the Memphis Law family!
