{"id":5922,"date":"2016-05-17T15:45:04","date_gmt":"2016-05-17T20:45:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/onlegalgrounds.law.memphis.edu\/wordpress\/?p=5922"},"modified":"2016-05-17T21:11:59","modified_gmt":"2016-05-18T02:11:59","slug":"sba-2016-2017-president-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/memphislawblog.com\/index.php\/sba-2016-2017-president-report\/","title":{"rendered":"SBA 2016-2017 President Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Student Bar Association Constitution at Article IV Section 2 (C)(2) states, \u201cthe President shall submit, at the first Administrative Council meeting of his term in office, a report of the programs and activities that the SBA should strive to obtain under his leadership. The President shall direct the Secretary to maintain a copy of this report at all times and to make the copy available to any student that wishes to view it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The following is the official 2016-2017 President Report:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Student Leaders Committee<\/strong>: a committee appointed by the SBA President with the goal of having active and frequent communication between all of the student organizations at Memphis Law. The committee members will be the President, or equivalent there of, of each student organization. The Student Leader Committee will attempt to ensure the school events calendar works to the benefit of the majority the student body.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A Counselor on site at Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law<\/strong>: SBA will seek to work with the school administration to ensure that the students have access to a counselor on our campus.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wellness Wednesdays<\/strong>: a program to instill a sense of self-awareness regarding physical, mental, and emotional health to each student. This will involve student activities, guest speakers, and informational sessions throughout the academic year.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Faculty Presentations<\/strong>: an opportunity for the students to learn about the projects and studies of the faculty of Memphis Law.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Community Service Projects<\/strong>: as detailed by the Community Service Liaison in an official report each semester, the SBA will perform two service projects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>#WherestheTiger<\/strong>: a student-driven program in the hopes of reuniting the school with the mascot statute of the Tiger. The goal of this program is to respectfully and cooperatively takes steps to work with the alumni and administration in search for a solution to an issue students feel strongly about. The statute of the tiger helps to foster school spirit and a sense of community for the law school, and the student body would like for it to return.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fall 2016 Events: <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>1L Class of 2019 Welcome<\/strong>: an event at the end of Orientation to welcome the incoming 1L class, and introduce them to the SBA.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Annual<\/strong> <strong>Golf Tournament<\/strong>: a fundraising event for the SBA. The proceeds will go to helping the SBA pay for other events, guest speakers, or student needs. The tournament this year will be for golfers only, followed by a reception luncheon open to all students. The goal of the luncheon will be to foster relationships with alumni and the local bar association.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Trivia Night<\/strong>: a fun event geared towards building morale and relationship between professors and students. There should be prizes for the first and second place teams, and for the team with the most creative name.<\/li>\n<li><strong>First Anniversary of Promenade! Fall Festival<\/strong>: Last year, SBA and the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of law teamed up with the City of Memphis, the Riverfront Development Corp., the Downtown Memphis Commission, and the Cossitt Library for a very cool project called &#8220;Promenade!&#8221; The idea of Promenade! is to draw attention to various spots along the riverfront that are currently under-utilized but have great potential, and \u201cactivate\u201d them with a variety of activities and improvements. October is the anniversary of Promenade! and SBA will celebrate that by hosting a fall festival there for the student body.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Breakfast Bonanza<\/strong>: a fundraising event for the SBA. The goal of the event is to raise money for the annual Barrister\u2019s Ball. It will be an event that is open to students, faculty, administration, and alumni. All proceeds will go towards the expenses of Barrister\u2019s Ball.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Barrister\u2019s Ball<\/strong>: an annual semi-formal event held to celebrate our law school community in an intimate and elegant setting. The goal of the celebration is to focus on the unification of each member of the student body and foster a spirit of fellowship.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spring 2017 Events<\/strong>:<\/li>\n<li><strong>Annual Auction<\/strong>: a fundraising event for the SBA. Donations from the local Memphis community will be auctioned off in a silent auction followed by the live auction. The live auction will consist of the donations provided by the Memphis Law Professors. The proceeds will go to the SBA to pay for other events, guest speakers, or student needs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>ABA Mental Health Awareness Day<\/strong>: SBA will put together information and activities to bring awareness of the very real concerns about mental health.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Grizz Night<\/strong>: a night where the student body goes to Fedex Forum together as a student body to cheer on the Memphis Grizzlies! The goal of the event is to foster school spirit, and a sense of community for law students, as well as the city of Memphis.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flaw Review<\/strong>: an annual event always free to the student body. It is intended to be a celebration of the academic year. Each class, 2L, 3L, 1L Section 11, 1L Section 12, and the faculty\/administration will create and perform a skit. The skits will be good, clean fun laughing at ourselves and enjoying each others company.<\/li>\n<li><strong>3L Class of 2017 Graduation Celebration<\/strong>: a graduation party for the class of 2017 to celebrate the achievements of the class, and to acknowledge their contributions to the law school.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Race Judicata<\/strong>: an annual 5K held by the SBA benefiting Memphis Area Legal Services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I am honored to serve as the 2016-2017 Student Bar Association President. My main focus as the SBA President will be to uphold the SBA Constitution, and the mission of the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. It is my personal goal to work with each member of the SBA Executive Board to ensure that their goals are achieved. Also to work with the faculty, staff, and administration so that any ideas, concerns, or expectations are met. I want to strive to enable our student body to strengthen themselves, our school, and our community.
