{"id":4505,"date":"2015-12-18T11:23:11","date_gmt":"2015-12-18T17:23:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/onlegalgrounds.law.memphis.edu\/wordpress\/?p=4505"},"modified":"2015-12-18T11:23:11","modified_gmt":"2015-12-18T17:23:11","slug":"aba-business-law-diversity-clerkship-apply-by-january-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/memphislawblog.com\/index.php\/aba-business-law-diversity-clerkship-apply-by-january-8\/","title":{"rendered":"ABA Business Law Diversity Clerkship: Apply by January 8"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The ABA Business Law Section Diversity Clerkship Program will place nine 1L or 2L students in paid Clerkships in business related courts across the country.<\/p>\n<div id=\"tab-content702db0a5d4194bf99e6596ea5944814b0\">\n<p><em>Program Objectives<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To encourage more diverse law students to apply for clerkship positions.<\/li>\n<li>To foster relationships between business court judges and diverse law students.<\/li>\n<li>To provide students with a foundation in various aspects of business law.<\/li>\n<li>To provide opportunities for students to meet a wide variety of lawyers who are active in the practice of business law and are members of the Business Law Section.<\/li>\n<li>To establish a support system for diverse students who are pursuing business court clerkship positions and a possible career in business law.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Clerk Roles and Responsibilities<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The purpose of the Diversity Clerkship Program is to provide hands-on experience and exposure in Business Law to law students.\u00a0 Roles and responsibilities of selected Diversity Clerkship participants include but are not limited to the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Researching cases<\/li>\n<li>Drafting memoranda and opinions<\/li>\n<li>Observing trials<\/li>\n<li>Networking with local attorneys and judges<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>Possible Locations<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Clerkship locations will be determined after clerks are selected based on the needs of Business Court Judges in various locations. Placements from the 2015 program included the following locations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chicago, IL<\/li>\n<li>Columbia, SC<\/li>\n<li>Greensboro, NC<\/li>\n<li>Jackson, MS<\/li>\n<li>Las Vegas, NV<\/li>\n<li>Pittsburgh, PA<\/li>\n<li>Santa Ana, CA<\/li>\n<li>Wilmington, DE<\/li>\n<li>Upper Marlboro, MD<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Compensation<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Participants in the Diversity Clerkship will receive a $6,000 stipend to cover living expenses upon the start of their Clerkship.<\/p>\n<p>They will also receive an all-expense paid trip to the Business Law Section Annual Meeting in September, where they will get the opportunity to take advantage of programming, and networking opportunities within the Section.<\/p>\n<p><em><u>Applicant Criteria<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><u><\/u>Applicants must be current first or second year law students attending an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanbar.org\/content\/aba\/groups\/legal_education\/resources\/aba_approved_law_schools\/in_alphabetical_order.html\">ABA-approved law school<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Applicants must be considered diverse in one of the following ways:\n<ul>\n<li>Law student of color<\/li>\n<li>Women<\/li>\n<li>Law students with disabilities<\/li>\n<li>LGBT law students<\/li>\n<li>Students who have overcome social or economic disadvantages such as a physical disability, financial constraints, or cultural impediments to becoming a law student<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Applicants must demonstrate financial need.<\/li>\n<li>Applicants must be ABA Law Student Division and Business Law Section Members.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><u>Application Components and Deadline<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The
