We also expect to have a special guest from the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, one of the nation\u2019s most respected and influential civil rights law organizations.<\/p>\n<p>TJI was formed just last spring, making it one of Memphis Law\u2019s newest student organizations. At this meeting, we\u2019ll introduce new and returning members to TJI\u2019s mission, share this year\u2019s events and community partnership opportunities, and walk through how you can get involved. We\u2019ll also answer questions about what transformative justice, movement lawyering, and abolition-centered advocacy look like in practice at Memphis Law.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is TJI?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>TJI is a Memphis Law student organization dedicated to confronting the criminal legal system\u2019s role in mass incarceration, over-policing, and punitive practices, while uplifting community-centered approaches rooted in healing, accountability, and care. Our goal is to equip law students with tools for movement lawyering, abolitionist legal strategies, public defense, and community partnership through panels, workshops, and collaborations with advocates and impacted communities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Get Involved?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>TJI offers law students the chance to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Learn and practice community-engaged lawyering skills through panels, teach-ins, and workshops with local organizers and practitioners.<\/li>\n<li>Build professional connections across Memphis\u2019 criminal legal system ecosystem and explore public interest\/social justice pathways.<\/li>\n<li>Collaborate on student-led programming that advances racial and civil justice in our city\u2019s unique civil-rights legacy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Whether you want to help plan events, conduct research for partner organizations, support public campaigns, or just learn more about transformative justice\/criminal legal reform, your level of commitment is up to you\u2014every contribution matters!<\/p>\n<p><strong>This Year at a Glance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Possible activities that TJI will coordinate this year include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Panels &amp; Conversations with community advocates, public defenders, and scholars<\/li>\n<li>Skill-building workshops on movement lawyering, client-centered advocacy, and policy strategy<\/li>\n<li>Community engagement opportunities with local organizations working to reduce harm and expand real safety<\/li>\n<li>Student-led projects that connect classroom learning to on-the-ground justice work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Event Details<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udcc5 <strong>Tuesday, September 16<\/strong><br \/>\n\ud83d\udd5b <strong>12:00 \u2013 1:00 PM<\/strong><br \/>\n\ud83d\udccd <strong>Room 326<\/strong><br \/>\n\ud83e\udd6a <strong>Bring your own lunch<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Questions?
