{"id":30621,"date":"2023-11-27T08:50:56","date_gmt":"2023-11-27T14:50:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/memphislawblog.com\/?p=30621"},"modified":"2023-11-27T08:50:56","modified_gmt":"2023-11-27T14:50:56","slug":"procedures-for-unreasonable-hardships-illness-or-emergencies-during-exams-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/memphislawblog.com\/index.php\/procedures-for-unreasonable-hardships-illness-or-emergencies-during-exams-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Procedures for Unreasonable Hardships, Illness, or Emergencies During Exams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Academic Regulation 10.6 provides the procedures that apply when a student is unable to take an exam due to an unreasonable hardship, which includes \u201cillness and other matters beyond the control of the student.\u201d\u00a0 Pursuant to Regulation 10.6, if a student is unable to take an exam due to an unreasonable hardship, the exam will be deferred to a later date.\u00a0 Dean Wilson will determine whether a deferral is appropriate, what documentation is necessary to support the deferral, and the date of the rescheduled exam based on the specific circumstances.\u00a0 If an in-person exam is deferred, the Registrar will proctor an in-person exam on the rescheduled date.<\/p>\n<p>If a situation arises before an exam that will cause you to be unable to take the exam as scheduled,\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:jlwlson2@memphis.edu;maden@memphis.edu;cedwrds2@memphis.edu\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">contact Associate Dean Jodi Wilson, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs Meredith Aden, or Law Registrar Cheryl Edwards<\/a>\u00a0as soon as feasible after the situation arises.\u00a0 To protect your anonymity, you should\u00a0<em><strong>not<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0contact your professor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Illness or Emergency Arising\u00a0<em>During\u00a0<\/em>An Exam<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Academic Regulation 10.9 provides the procedures that apply when an illness or emergency arises during an exam that makes completing the exam an unreasonable hardship.\u00a0 Notify the faculty member or person proctoring the exam immediately upon the event\u2019s occurrence, if you are able to do so.\u00a0 The faculty member\/proctor will notify the Dean\u2019s office and, thereafter, the Dean\u2019s office will coordinate with the faculty member to reschedule the examination as circumstances permit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COVID and Other Illnesses\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although Regulation 10.6 predates COVID by many years, the regulation covers a wide range of circumstances, including many common illnesses and mandatory quarantine periods arising from COVID protocols.\u00a0 Law students should contact\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:jlwlson2@memphis.edu;maden@memphis.edu;cedwrds2@memphis.edu\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">Associate Dean Jodi Wilson, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs Meredith Aden, or Law Registrar Cheryl Edwards<\/a>\u00a0to report a positive COVID test or any other illness that could affect your ability to effectively study for or take an exam.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Honor Code<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students who seek an exam deferral pursuant to Academic Regulation 10.6 or an exam continuance pursuant to Academic Regulation 10.7 are subject to the Honor Code.\u00a0 Misrepresenting the circumstances establishing the need for a deferral or continuance would be a violation of the Honor Code and would be reported to the Board of Law Examiners as part of the Character &amp;
