{"id":29466,"date":"2023-09-07T13:39:59","date_gmt":"2023-09-07T18:39:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/memphislawblog.com\/?p=29466"},"modified":"2023-09-07T13:39:59","modified_gmt":"2023-09-07T18:39:59","slug":"3ls-apply-for-post-grad-jobs-with-the-missouri-public-defender-system-by-sunday-september-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/memphislawblog.com\/index.php\/3ls-apply-for-post-grad-jobs-with-the-missouri-public-defender-system-by-sunday-september-10\/","title":{"rendered":"3Ls: Apply for Post-Grad Jobs with the Missouri Public Defender System by Sunday September 10"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Missouri State Public Defender System will be at the Public Interest Fair on September 19 and will be conducting on campus interviews that afternoon.\u00a0 They have numerous post-graduate jobs open to 3Ls, and have hired several of our students in the past.\u00a0 Missouri is a Uniform Bar Exam state that currently requires a lower passing score than Tennessee.\u00a0 To apply for either of the two available opportunities (numerous jobs available under each),\u00a0 apply via Symplicity OCI, \u201cFALL 2023 OCI: Missouri State Public Defender System\u201d by September 10.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1) TRIAL LAWYERS: MISSOURI STATE PUBLIC DEFENDER SYSTEM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Basic Function: Provide legal representation to indigent clients charged with criminal offenses facing the possibility of incarceration.<\/p>\n<p>Job Duties: Duties to include litigating all aspects of the case through disposition at the trial court level including pretrial and trial preparation; appearing at regularly scheduled court dockets and all appearances concerning assigned caseload; promoting and protecting the best interest of the client at all times; maintaining client contact by telephone, appointments, or institutional visits; keeping client apprised of investigations, negotiations, and court rulings; drafting motions and pleadings.<\/p>\n<p>Qualifications: Must be sitting for Missouri (or UBE) Bar Exam in July 2024 or licensed in Missouri.<\/p>\n<p>Geographic: Location: Limited number of positions located in trial offices throughout Missouri. MSPD has 33 trial offices located throughout the state, including St. Louis, Kansas City, Columbia, Springfield, and various other cities. Priority placement is available for applicants interested in a rural placement.<\/p>\n<p>Salary\/Benefits: Law clerk awaiting bar results \u2013 $3,354\/month; $40,248\/yr<\/p>\n<p>Missouri licensed attorney starting salary \u2013 $5,000\/month; $60,000\/yr<\/p>\n<p>Eligible for full state benefits including 3 weeks vacation leave accrual per year; 3 weeks sick leave accrual per year; 12 paid holidays per year; Employer paid life insurance and long-term disability coverage; Low cost health insurance plan; Defined benefit retirement plan; Extensive in-house training and CLE opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Anticipated Start Date: August 2024<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) MISSOURI JUSTICE FELLOWSHIP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Description: Two year criminal defense fellowship with Missouri State Public Defender System (MSPD). Fellows will gain hands-on trial experience as they manage their own caseload and defend their clients through each step of the criminal case. By bringing quality legal representation to underserved communities in Missouri, fellows will work for positive change in the criminal legal system. Fellows receive two weeks of hands-on, intensive trial training with ongoing training and CLE opportunities throughout fellowship.<\/p>\n<p>Duties: Litigating all aspects of the case from arraignment through disposition, whether that be plea or trial; zealously advocating for their clients at all times, working to protect the best interests of the client and striving for optimal outcomes; maintaining communication with clients through telephone, in person, or institutional visits; communicating each step of the case to clients; negotiating with prosecutors; keeping client apprised of investigations, negotiations, and court rulings; drafting motions and pleadings; participating in fellowship activities such as trainings, workshops, and networking events.<\/p>\n<p>Qualifications: Must be licensed to practice law in Missouri or be sitting for UBE Bar Exam in July 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Location: Placement in underserved communities as determined by MSPD.
