The Tennessee Office of the Post-Conviction Defender (OPCD)<\/span> in Nashville<\/strong>\u00a0provides legal representation to indigent death-sentenced inmates in post-conviction and other collateral proceedings throughout the state of Tennessee.The OPCD invites law students to apply for full-time, unpaid summer internships for a ten-week period<\/strong>.\u00a0 This internship is pre-approved for pro bono credit at Memphis law.\u00a0 The OPCD is flexible in establishing work schedules that are tailored to the interests and <\/em>availability of the individual interns.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/div>\n

Our interns assist attorneys in all
\nstages of client representation including:
\n\u2022 Researching constitutional, criminal, and civil rights issues;
\n\u2022 Interviewing witnesses and visiting clients on death row;
\n\u2022 Reviewing and organizing records and discovery materials;
\n\u2022 Consulting with expert witnesses; and
\n\u2022 Preparing cases for pleadings, evidentiary hearings, and appellate
\narguments.<\/span><\/div>\n

Interns may also have to opportunity to attend court proceedings throughout the state of Tennessee, tour the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution (which houses Tennessee\u2019s death row) and the Middle Tennessee Mental Health Institute, and participate in trainings on capital punishment, criminal defense, and career development.<\/span><\/div>\n

Preference is typically given to second-year law students, but law students of all levels are accepted.
