The Tennessee Valley Authority, a corporation owned by the U.S. government, is the largest public power provider in the U.S. TVA\u2019s Office of the General Counsel has approximately 40 attorneys that provide a full range of legal services to TVA\u2019s organizations, including representing TVA\u2019s interests in judicial and administrative litigation. Legal interns will be assigned to work on multiple assignments in TVA\u2019s Office of the General Counsel. Assignments are given in terms of specific objectives; work is reviewed upon completion. 5) The Southern Poverty Law Center (https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/<\/a>) <\/strong>seeks interns for the following practice groups:<\/p>\n

\u2022 Children\u2019s Rights \u2013 Our Children\u2019s Rights practice group is focused on stopping the \u201cschool to prison pipeline;\u201d ensuring educational equity for children from all backgrounds, particularly poor and minority students; and ensuring children\u2019s access to mental health services in the most integrated environments appropriate to their needs.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Criminal Justice Reform \u2013 Our Criminal Justice Reform practice group is dedicated to ending the mass incarceration of adults, juveniles, and immigrants; stopping the practice of trying children as adults; fighting the criminalization of immigrants; and ending abusive conditions of confinement and other exploitative practices of the criminal justice system.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Economic Justice \u2013 Our Economic Justice Project is fighting back against deeply engrained policies and practices that punish the poor. We\u2019re currently working to end debtors\u2019 prisons, wealth-based bail systems, and related criminal justice practices that trap the poor in a cycle of court debt that can cause their ongoing incarceration. We work to protect low-income consumers from predatory loan practices and ensure that the poor have access to the social safety net.<\/div>\n

\u2022 Immigrant Justice\/Southeast Immigrant Freedom Initiative (SIFI)\u2013 Our Immigrant Justice Project is working to protect the dignity and workplace rights of guest workers and other migrants; protect the civil and human rights of immigrants from discriminatory laws; stop unfair deportation practices; and uphold the rights of immigrant children to enroll in public schools and receive English language instruction and other services which they\u2019re entitled.<\/div>\n

\u2022 LGBTQ Rights\/Special Litigation \u2013 Our LGBTQ Rights\/Special Litigation practice group is working to ensure that LGBTQ people achieve full equality and dignity under the law. This practice group is also fighting in the courts against hate groups and extremists who target people based on their race, religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity.<\/div>\n

\u2022 Voting Rights \u2013 Our Voting Rights practice group is fighting back through litigation, legislative advocacy and education to end systematic voter suppression and to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to make their voice heard at the ballot box.<\/div>\n

Office Locations<\/span>: Our intention is for our Internships to be in office however, if there are restrictions due to COVID-19, there maybe opportunities for remote work.<\/div>\n
\u2022 Montgomery, AL \u2013 The Southern Poverty Law Center was founded and is headquartered in the city that was at the heart of the Civil Rights Movement. Nearly all of our Practice Groups, as well as the rest of the SPLC\u2019s program areas and operations staff, work out of this centralized location.<\/div>\n
\u2022 Atlanta, GA \u2013 Our legal staff in Atlanta primarily focus on work on our Immigrant Justice Project and Voting Rights, and LGBTQ. Rights and Special Litigation.<\/div>\n
\u2022 New Orleans, LA \u2013 The legal team in New Orleans focus on Children\u2019s Rights, Criminal Justice Reform, and Economic Justice. \u2022 Jackson, MS \u2013 In Jackson, our teams work across Children\u2019s Rights and Criminal Justice Reform.<\/div>\n
\u2022 Miami, FL \u2013 Our teams in Miami work in the Children\u2019s Rights and Criminal Justice Reform, and Immigrant Justice Project.<\/div>\n
\u2022 Tallahassee, FL \u2013 At our newest location in Tallahassee, teams work on Children\u2019s Rights and Criminal Justice Reform.<\/div>\n
\u2022 SIFI Remote Sites (Lumpkin, GA, Folkston, GA, Ocilla, GA, Alexandria, LA) – SIFI Locations require interns to have access to a car for the summer.<\/div>\n
Interns will be assigned to a practice group and office based on experience and the needs of the Center.<\/div>\n
Legal interns are compensated by the Center. The Center pays a base of $600 weekly, with opportunities for additional compensation through overtime<\/span>.<\/div>\n
Interns are expected to begin in early June. A minimum commitment of ten consecutive weeks is expected. We unfortunately are not able to split summers.<\/div>\n
