Several people have reported that they received the following email asking them to “validate” their email account over the weekend, which is not genuine:
This type of email is known as a “phishing” attempt, because it wants you to supply your University username and password to a site which is not owned by the University.
“The University of Memphis will never request personal information (i.e., your SSN, UUID and password, birth date, or any account numbers) via email” (http://www.memphis.edu/its/security/personal-information-security.php)
If you receive such emails, please forward them to abuse@memphis.edu or lawit@memphis.edu, and we will take the necessary steps to block them.
For more information on phishing emails, please check out the following ITS page on the topic: http://www.memphis.edu/its/security/phishing.php.
