2025 SUMMER 1L EXTERNSHIP
The Air Force Judge Advocate General’s Corps is seeking applications for our unpaid 2025
1L summer externship program. Externs gain hands-on legal experience in diverse legal practice
areas while learning more about the Air Force JAG Corps.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
Externs work under attorney supervision at Air Force and Space Force locations throughout the
United States in support of numerous practice areas including military justice (criminal law), legal
assistance, civil and administrative law, labor and employment law, international and operational
law, space and cyber law, contract and fiscal law, medical law, claims and tort litigation, and
environmental law. At the conclusion of the program, externs receive an evaluation from their Staff
Judge Advocate that may be included in Air Force JAG Corps Entry Program applications, such as
the Direct Appointment Program.
An extern’s duties vary based on location but typically include researching legal issues, writing legal
briefs and opinions, assisting with investigations, interviewing witnesses, and performing other tasks
as required. Externships are unpaid, but externs may earn academic credit in accordance with their
law school externship policies and may be eligible for Federal Work Study through their law school.
The Air Force does not pay for housing or travel expenses. Externs must be able to secure their own
housing and pay for travel to and from the externship location.
REQUIREMENTS
• United States citizen (birth or naturalization)
• Enrolled in an ABA-approved law school (1L at time of application)
• Able to obtain law school permission for externship (credit is authorized)
• Available to work full time for up to 40 hours per week for 8-12 consecutive weeks
• Able to obtain a Common Access Card through a Tier-1 background investigation

externship aligns with your personal and professional goals.
3. Geographic/Base Preferences Memorandum – Limited to 1 page. List your anticipated
