| Dear Law Schools and Applicants,
We are writing to remind you NOT to use encrypted transcripts in your OSCAR applications. Transcripts are often provided as an encrypted PDFs. However, encrypted PDFs cannot be used as part of any documents you upload to OSCAR during your application process. Encrypted PDFs that are included in applications can corrupt the application packets and prevent them from displaying correctly to judges and staff attorney offices. In some cases, applications can be completely blank. The University of Memphis Registrar’s office does not provide encrypted transcripts, so this would only possibly apply to undergraduate transcripts or transcripts you yourself had encrypted. This post also clarifies that you can use unofficial transcripts.
What Should You Do Instead?
Obtain and use unencrypted versions of your transcripts to prevent errors in your OSCAR applications. If you have already included encrypted transcripts in your applications, replace them with unencrypted transcripts as described below.
What is the Maximum File Size for Transcripts?
OSCAR now accepts transcripts up to 8 MB in size. This change will accommodate the upload of scanned PDF files in lieu of encrypted PDFs. Additionally, the change accommodates schools using non-traditional grading systems that generate PDF files larger than the previous 1 MB size limit.
Note: OSCAR will no longer attach finalized application packets as part of the confirmation email, as the packets might exceed the allowable size for email attachments. Applicants will continue to receive a notification email from OSCAR when an application is finalized; however, they must download application packets directly from OSCAR.
What If You Only Have Encrypted Transcripts?
You should contact your law school (or other relevant schools) for assistance in obtaining unencrypted copies of your transcripts. The OSCAR Program Office cannot assist in this matter.
Note: OSCAR increased the maximum document size for transcripts to 8 MB to accommodate scanned transcripts.
Can You Submit Unofficial Transcripts?
Yes, judges and staff attorney offices accept unofficial transcripts with OSCAR applications. If the chambers or office requires an official (encrypted) transcript, they will request it via email or another channel outside of OSCAR.
What If You Already Used an Encrypted Transcript in OSCAR?
If you used an encrypted transcript in your OSCAR applications, then you must delete the encrypted transcript from your applications and replace it with an unencrypted transcript. You must do this individually for every application that includes the encrypted transcript. You should also remove the encrypted transcript from your Documents list.
