Summer Financial Aid Information

The financial aid office has had an influx of inquiries regarding Summer eligibility.  Students who have borrowed the maximum $20,500 unsubsidized loan between Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 will only be eligible for the federal Direct Graduate PLUS loan program for the Summer.  You may access your myMemphis account to see if you took out the maximum $20,500.  Be aware that the minimum enrollment requirement for summer is at least three (3) LAW credit hours.   (If you are dually enrolled in another graduate program you will need a minimum of six (6) Graduate hours to qualify for a loan).

The majority of you will be eligible for roughly $6,700 if you are classified as an in-state student living off campus and taking three (3) LAW hours.  If you do not fall in this classification, please e-mail me at jpullis@memphis.edu , providing me with your U-ID number and number of summer hours you will enroll in so I can determine your eligibility.  Those who are receiving any type of scholarship, tuition/fee waiver, or other discounts/benefits should advise me ahead of time so that you are not ‘over awarded’.  There is a summer budget adjustment process if you need more funds that is available upon request.

To apply for the Graduate PLUS loan:

  • Go to studentloans.gov.
  • Sign in using your federal PIN – the same one you used to complete your FAFSA.
  • Click on Request a Direct PLUS Loan
  • Click on Graduate PLUS
  • Select the Award Year 2014-2015
  • Choose our school listed under the letter “T” for THE University of Memphis
  • Decide whether you want to be processed for the maximum or if you want a specific loan amount.
  • The pre-set loan period for Summer is June 2015 to August 2015
  • Once you complete everything and submit your application, a credit decision is rendered immediately

Please allow our office at least 2 to 3 business days to receive your application electronically.  Once we have your information, a Summer column will be added to your Financial Aid Awards on your myMemphis account.

Feel free to e-mail me at jpullis@memphis.edu  if you have any questions.  Thank you for your patience during this busy time.

Sincerely,

Joanna Darden
