SBA Welcome Letter
Dear Memphis Law Class of 2024,
Welcome to Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law! My name is Danielle Fong, and this year I am serving as the President of Memphis Law’s student government, the Student Bar Association (“SBA”). On behalf of SBA, congratulations on your acceptance into law school! The entire Memphis Law community is so excited that you decided to begin your legal career here, and we are looking forward to all the new ideas, energy, and personality that your class will bring to our school.
The Student Bar Association is the official representative body for all Memphis Law students. The purpose of SBA is to unite all Memphis Law students to foster fellowship and cooperation within our academic community. SBA also serves as the link between students, the administration, the Memphis and American Bar Association, the Memphis Law Alumni Board, and the broader legal community. Throughout the year, we will host events focusing on socializing, current legal issues, networking, community service, and wellness.
As new students, you are all officially members of SBA. In the next few weeks, you will learn more about SBA and the rest of our Administrative Council. During election week at the end of August, you will have an opportunity to become a student leader representing your class on SBA as a Bar Governor. I encourage you to keep up with our student blog, On Legal Grounds, as this is the main method of communication for all organizations and the school. You can also follow SBA on Facebook (@Memphis.SBA) and Instagram (@sbamemphislaw) for updates about our upcoming social events, programs, and the upcoming elections for Bar Governor.
As Orientation begins, I urge you to remind yourself why you are here. Orientation will seem overwhelming, but it will help ground you as you begin this new chapter in your life. Get to know your classmates, faculty, and upperclassmen, and never be afraid to ask questions. You are all about to embark on an incredibly challenging but rewarding journey that is just the beginning of your careers in the law. We have all been where you are today, and we are all excited to help you navigate this path. Remember that YOU are the reason you are here – your hard work, your commitment to your goals, and your desire to learn. The workload of law school can be intense, and at times each one of you will become overwhelmed. Embrace those feelings and take the time to remember why you wanted to come to law school in the first place. This is your experience, and you are the one that defines it.
As your SBA President, I am here to offer advice, friendship, and help. The SBA Administrative Council members are always eager and willing to offer their guidance and friendship. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us! You are also welcome to reach out to me at Danielle.Fong@memphis.edu, or on campus at any time.
I am so looking forward to meeting you all during Orientation week, and I am excited to meet you all in person at our first social event, your Class of 2024 Welcome Party, on Friday, August 13th at Loflin Yard from 6:00-9:00PM. We will also be celebrating the Class of 2023, who did not have the opportunity to celebrate last year. I wish you all the best!
Warmest regards,
Danielle Fong
President, Student Bar Association
