President’s Letter to the Class of 2020

Memphis Law Class of 2020,

Welcome to Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law! It is an impressive achievement to be accepted into law school – and a tremendous accomplishment to begin your legal education here, at Memphis Law. Congratulations! Our entire student body looks forward to you joining us in our historic halls. As your Student Bar Association President for the 2017 – 2018 school year, I am excited for the bright ideas, fresh energy, and unique personalities that your class will bring to our school.

The Student Bar Association, the SBA, is the official representative body for all Memphis Law Students and for all of the student organizations at our law school. We are the link between you, the administration, the Memphis Bar Association and the American Bar Association, the Memphis Law Alumni Board, and the legal community as a whole. In addition to hosting several social events throughout the year, we organize programs to improve the law student experience, to modernize our historic campus, and to expand our career opportunities.

As new students, you each are now members of the SBA. In the next few weeks, you will learn more about the SBA and meet our Administrative Council who each have been elected to represent the students. During election week in the end of August, you will also have the opportunity to become a student leader representing your class on the SBA as a 1L Bar Governor. I encourage you to read our student blog, On Legal Grounds, and to follow the SBA on Facebook for updates about our upcoming social events, programs, and the upcoming elections for Bar Governor.

As you begin your legal studies, you may at times feel overwhelmed by the demands of the worthy endeavor you have begun. The path through law school can be arduous. Remember – you will never be alone on this difficult path. Your peers will become some of your closest friends. You and your classmates will grit, grind, and unwind together for the next three years and beyond.

As your SBA President, I am here for you with advice, friendship, and help. The SBA Administrative Council members are also always willing to offer their guidance and friendship. Reach out to us. Feel free to reach out to me at (901) 314 1876 and on campus at any time.

I am excited to meet you all during orientation next week. I look forward to celebrating your accomplishments at our first social event, your Class of 2020 Welcome Party, on Friday, August 11.

Best of luck,

Hallie Goodman Flanagan
President, Student Bar Association
