Please see below for a detailed list of pro bono opportunities that reoccur throughout the year. So many places, times, and ways to give back – so get out there and serve! Don’t forget to take a supervisor certification form (available on the Career Services webpage) and have it signed.
Courthouse Advice and Counsel Clinic
1:30 pm to 4:00 pm every Thursday in Room 134 of the Shelby County Courthouse
This weekly clinic, formerly known as the Attorney of the day, needs one to two law students to assist pro se litigants in General Sessions in understanding the process and procedure they need to follow. Veterans’ Clinic
12:00 pm to 2:00 pm on the second Tuesday of each month at the VA at 1407 Union Avenue.
Four to five volunteers usually deal with expungements, driver’s license reinstatements, divorce and child support issues.
Advanced Directives Panel
On an as needed basis through the Memphis Area Legal Services
This panel of volunteers provides legal assistance by drafting advance directives and last wills and testaments for individuals, including those with terminal illnesses or who are elderly. Law students and paralegals provide technical support to the attorneys and assist with the execution of the documents. Attorneys are invited to assist at senior citizen centers or churches to draft and execute various advance directives. . Street Law
Various times and locations
Students volunteer to teach survey law classes in high schools throughout the city. There is monthly panel at Central High school. Spots are also available at Hamilton High School (Wednesday 2/24 from 3:30-4:30pm) and at Soulsville Charter School (several Tuesdays from 3:30-4:30pm). Also, before teaching a class you must speak with Shrushti Kothari at sykthari@memphis.edu about a brief orientation.
Saturday Legal Clinic
10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library
This monthly legal clinic regularly serves between 80 and 100 clients. New volunteers are welcome. This is a great way to network with attorneys in different practices areas and gain experience in various areas of law. Please be sure to bring your laptop!
