National Moot Court Team Tryouts

2L’s & 3L’s  ARE INVITED TO TRY OUT FOR THE 2020 NATIONAL MOOT COURT TEAM
**TEAM MEMBERS WILL RECEIVE TWO HOURS OF COURSE CREDIT.**
  • The team is coached by Professor Barbara Kritchevsky, Director of Advocacy.
  • The team will consist of 2-3 advocates
  • The problem generally arrives in mid-September.
  • The team must write the brief with no assistance.
  • The brief is generally due in mid-October.
  • The competition is in mid-November and will be hosted by LSU Virtually.
  • The top two teams in the region advance to the National Finals, which are held in New York City in early February.
Students interested in trying out must submit: (1) your resume; (2) a 1-2 page statement of interest; and (3) a writing sample to Chief Justice of the Moot Court Board, Rose Logan (rmlogan@memphis.edu) and Coach K (bkrtchvs@memphis.edu). Your writing sample can be your best work from your Legal Methods course, or any other brief that you would like to submit. Application materials are due Wednesday, September 9th at 1pm.
Try-outs: Will take place on Thursday, September 10th, and Friday, September 11th. After your materials are submitted you will be contacted about a tryout date and time. The tryout consists of an argument and an interview. Applicants may argue any issue they wish (most give the argument they gave in the last in-school competition). Applicants should be prepared for questions; the judging panel will stop the argument after approximately 7 minutes. The interview will follow the argument. Numerous factors go into selecting a team. The writing sample is very important because the brief is a crucial part of the competition. The interview, argument, and statement of interest are also important. Other relevant factors include prior work and writing experience, experience as a member of a team, and success in law school and previous competitions. We are seeking a well-balanced team and are likely to select individuals with different strengths and backgrounds. Membership on the team is a substantial time commitment, but many people have successfully competed and been members of Law Review and Moot Court Board. You will be notified of selection no later than Monday, September 14th.
