NATIONAL MOCK TRIAL TEAM INFORMATION SESSION AND TRYOUTS

To all 2Ls and 3Ls:

The Moot Court Board and Professor Danny Schaffzin invite you to try out for this year’s National Trial Team.  In 2012, the National Trial Team won a regional championship and finished as national semifinalists (final four) among 320 teams entered in the National Trial Competition.  Last year, the Team reached the NTC regional finals.  We are looking for students interested in improving their trial advocacy skills to help us build on this winning tradition.

Tryout Information Session: An Information Session about the National Trial Team and tryouts will be held on Monday, October 12th, at noon, in the Historic Courtroom.  The Information Session is NOT mandatory.

Tryout Dates and Times: Tryouts will be held from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on Monday, October 19th, and from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20th.  Each tryout will last 15 minutes.

Preparation: Applicants will be expected to give a closing argument based on Canas v. Hammer, a case file from a previous National Trial Competition.  The closing argument should be 5-7 minutes in length.  Applicants can argue for either the plaintiff or defendant.  Any questions about the substance of the closing argument should be directed to Professor Schaffzin at dschffzn@memphis.edu.

Registration: Interested students should register for the National Mock Trial Team’s TWEN page (2015-16 National Mock Trial Team”) and sign-up for a tryout slot under the “sign-up sheets” tab on the TWEN page.  Once you have signed up for a tryout slot, please e-mail that slot and a current resume to Associate Chief Justice Justin Prescott at djprsctt@memphis.edu.  You can access the tryout case file, Canas v. Hammer, under the “Course Materials” tab on the TWEN page.

Please register for your National Trial Team tryout by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, October 16th.

Thank you for your interest, and we look forward to seeing you at this Friday’s information session.
