ML – Memphis Law Magazine Issue 14
|
We’re proud to bring you issue #14 of our award-winning law school magazine. Within this issue, you’ll find our feature story about the concept of food deserts and the unique legal history behind their root causes. From redlining to racism, food deserts have their beginnings in the policies, laws, and economics of cities across America. We look at what factored into their creation and proliferation, as well as unique ways to combat them going forward, from both legal and cultural perspectives. Our alumni profile puts the spotlight on Tannera Gibson (JD ’08), the first female African American president of the Memphis Bar Association and first female African American partner at Burch Porter & Johnson in Memphis. This issue also features a spotlight on one of our amazing students in Lupita Martinez (Class of 2022). That’s her on the cover of the magazine and you can read all about her inspiring journey to be a force for good in the world and to leave it a better place for her daughter to grow up in. We’ve also got an article about a new monument behind the law school dedicated to the suffrage movement and the trailblazers who were a part of it in Shelby County, as well as a piece showcasing the return of one of the city’s biggest legal events, the Pillars of Excellence Awards Dinner presented by the University of Memphis School of Law Alumni Chapter. Finally, we hope you’ll enjoy reading all about our recent visiting professors and their impact at Memphis Law, as well as all of our faculty news, alumni updates, and law school happenings. There is also an interesting faculty op-ed feature written by Professor and Director of our Bar Preparation Program, DeShun Harris, as she goes into detail about the changes coming to the Bar exam and how Memphis Law and our students are uniquely positioned for success.
