Marcus Orr Center for the Humanities Works-In-Progress Seminar with Speaker Prof. Barsky

The MOCH Works-In-Progress Seminar will hold its first meeting of the semester next Wednesday, October 23 at 4pm in the African American Reading Room (Patterson Hall 221). We will discuss Robert Barsky’s chapter, “Come What May: What the Great Books Teach Us About Escaping Adversity,” from his in-progress book on the Great Books tradition and the figure of the refugee. We invite one and all to read, attend, discuss, and enjoy some light refreshments afterwards. The reading is attached below.

“Come What May: What the Great Books Teach Us About Escaping Adversity”

Dr. Barsky introduces the piece as follows: “I have appended the brief intro and first chapter, both in early draft form. Together they give the basis for the work, as well as an example of how the analysis might look (although I’m thinking of adding more specific examples from current refugee narratives, interwoven, by way of example and contrast/comparison with the literary works discussed). Any kind of feedback will be greatly appreciated!”

Robert Barsky is a Visiting Faculty in the Law School at the University of Memphis and Canada Research Chair in Law, Narrative, and Border Crossing in the Department of Law and Legal Studies at Carleton University. He was formerly a professor in the College of Arts and Science and the School of Law at Vanderbilt University. He is an expert on Noam Chomsky, literary theory, convention refugees, immigration, and refugee law.

The MOCH Works-In-Progress Seminar is a forum for faculty and graduate students working in the humanities (as broadly defined as possible) to share and discuss their yet-to-be-finished work. If you are interested in sharing your work with the WIP seminar in the future, or would like more information about the group, please contact Donal Harris (donal.harris@memphis.edu).
