Corporate Armies and Democracy: Let’s Talk About It

Join the National Lawyers Guild for the second installment of our ongoing series, “Friday Films for Thought.”  Meet us in Room 325 at 2:30 on Friday the 13th for a thoughtful movie and inclusive discussion. This week, we will be watching a documentary called “Iraq for Sale,” which documents the privatization of the United States military during the Iraq war.  There will be free popcorn! See plot synopsis below for more details.

Iraq for Sale (2006):  Gone are the days when the United States military was a completely self-reliant organization.  Instead, our armed services rely on Private Military Firms (PMFs) for an alarming number of crucial tasks including base-building, equipment maintenance, communications, protection of important individuals, and even the supply chain and preparation of food for the troops.  Our discussion afterward will focus on why PMFs have become so prominent, the strategic and fiscal costs associated with PMFs, as well as an exploration of any benefits they may bring.
