Advanced Moot Court Competition!!
Attention 2Ls and 3Ls:
The Moot Court Board is excited to give a preview of the 2022 Advanced Competition problem!
This year’s problem arises from a university student’s efforts to combat the school’s failure to address sexual assault by publicizing the issue on social media and in the school newspaper. Can she be sued for posting and commenting on another person’s defamatory post? Can the university stop publication of an article about the issue because of the potential fallout?
The first issue is statutory: Is an online publisher immune for soliciting and adding commentary to third-party content? The second is constitutional: Does the First Amendment protect an article in the student newspaper from administrative censorship? You tell us!
Get your co-counsel, draft your brief, and argue your position in front of the “Supreme Court” to take home the win. There are awards for first and second place winners, best brief, and top oral advocates.
All second- and third-year students can compete in Advanced, but we encourage everyone to sign up for the Appellate Advocacy course offered this fall. The class assignments revolve around the Advanced problem and you will brief the case for class, so you can get a leg up on the competition by enrolling in Appellate Advocacy (CRN 88124).
For questions about the competition or the course, please e-mail Associate Justice of the Advanced Competition, Kylie Ronnow, at ksronnow@memphis.edu or Director of the Advocacy Program, Barbara Kritchevsky, at bkrtchvs@memphis.edu.
