3Ls: Assistant District Attorney Positions in Houston, Texas
I’m reaching out to share an exciting opportunity for your current 3L law students who are interested in prosecution. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office (Houston, TX) is now accepting applications for our Precommit Program.
This program is designed to bridge the gap between law school graduation and bar results. Successful applicants will:

Begin working immediately after sitting for the bar exam in August 2026.

While waiting for bar results, earn $28/hour with full benefits (retirement, health insurance, vacation and comp time).

Perform the same meaningful, day-to-day work as licensed prosecutors, which includes having a caseload, appearing in a Misdemeanor court every day, and trying Misdemeanor cases as the first-chair lead prosecutor.

Be sworn in immediately as an Assistant District Attorneys once they pass the bar.
Once sworn in as an Assistant District Attorney, our office offers a starting salary of $93,100 plus benefits. The Precommit Program provides an unparalleled opportunity for students to gain real courtroom experience, develop advocacy skills, and make an immediate impact while awaiting bar results.
It’s also worth noting that Houston consistently ranks among the most affordable major cities in the country, with a cost of living well below the national average. Housing, transportation, and everyday expenses are significantly lower than in most large urban areas, meaning new attorneys are able to make the most of their salaries while enjoying life in the nation’s fourth-largest city.
Our office also provides reimbursement for Relocation Costs. Harris County may reimburse eligible newly hired employees (including candidates who have been extended a job offer) for standard relocation expenses up to a max of $5,000. Standard relocation expenses can include: travel to new location to find housing, travel while relocating, purchase of packing material, packing/unpacking of household goods, moving truck rental, commercial moving company costs, shipment of goods, storage of goods, shipment of personal vehicle.
Our goal with this program is to identify and recruit the most talented trial advocacy students from across the country—those who want to make a career out of becoming experienced trial attorneys and making an impact in the courtroom.
