1L Welcome Letter from SBA President

To The Incoming 1Ls,

On behalf of the Student Bar Association, welcome to Memphis Law! We are thrilled to have you joining our community, and I want you to know that every single one of you belongs here. Starting law school is one of the most exciting—and, yes, sometimes overwhelming— chapters of your life, and I want this letter to be the first of many reminders that you have an entire community behind you.

A little about me: I have been involved with SBA since my 1L year, first as a Bar Governor, followed by Elections Commissioner, and now serving as your SBA President. Serving the Memphis Law community as SBA President is truly the honor of my law school career. I have seen firsthand how meaningful our community can be when we show up for one another, and I am committed to making sure that spirit is alive and well for your class from day one.

This year, we are focused on making SBA events bigger, better, and more memorable than ever. Whether it is our staple events that you will come to know and love or brand-new additions to your calendar, our goal is to give you experiences that make law school about more than just casebooks and outlines. We want you to look forward to what is happening outside the classroom just as much as what is happening inside it. That leads me to another one of my priorities this year–creating more opportunities for you to connect with your professors and other attorneys within the Memphis legal community in relaxed, informal settings. Some of the most valuable relationships I have built at Memphis Law started with a simple conversation over coffee or at a student event. We are so excited to bring more of those moments to life.

Above all, I want you to know that SBA exists to make Memphis Law feel like home. Law school is challenging, but it is so much better when you feel like you are part of something. We are building a culture of inclusivity, school spirit, and genuine connection, and your class is a vital part of that. Please never hesitate to reach out, introduce yourself, or share your ideas — this is your SBA, too!

Again, I cannot wait to meet each of you. Get ready for an incredible year. Go Tigers!

Warm regards,

Caroline Weakley
