Just City – Plunge to Expunge featuring Prof. Daniel Kiel

On Friday, August 12, Just City will be hosting the first annual Plunge to Expunge.  Just City is putting an old-fashioned dunk tank in the parking lot of Memphis Made Brewing Co. at 768 South Cooper from 4-7pm. A few bucks for Just City’s Clean Slate Fund will buy you a chance to put Just City board member Prof. Daniel Kiel underwater.  So if you’ve ever received a grade you thought undeservingly low in law school – or really anywhere else – come feel the satisfaction of watching the good professor get soaked.  Plus, you’ll help a fellow Memphian get a second chance in life. Plus, MMBC will debut its latest beer – Justice Will PrevALE.

Just City’s Clean Slate Fund exists to support expungement petitions in Shelby County. Expungement of prior convictions is rare under current Tennessee law, and when someone qualifies, he or she must pay a $450.00 filing fee in order to petition for expungement. In addition to filing fees, recipients of Clean Slate Fund grants receive legal and administrative services in the form of communication with and retrieval of documents from the relevant court clerks offices in Shelby County. If necessary, Just City provides representation before the necessary court in order to secure expungement as part of the grant.
